The Asian Sensation

White Strawberries Around The World

Wish Farms calls them Pink-A-Boo® Pineberries, but other varieties of white strawberries and pineberries are grown in many parts of the world. Pineberries, which are more rounded and look more like wild berries, are very popular in Europe. However, the white strawberry, which is very large, reigns supreme in the country of Japan.

The Japanese “White Jewel”

Strawberries are very important in Japanese culture. They are gifted on special occasions and represent a sign of love. One variety, called Shiroi Houseki translates to “White Jewel”. It costs $10 for ONE berry that weighs 50 grams (1.76 ounces)! They are individually packaged in a tiny, plastic enclosed bed that the berry lies on.
